.DISCUSSION...
Clouds from a cutoff low began making its way to our area on
Friday along with the trough sliding in from Canada. The
incoming trough will absorb the cutoff low and bring rain to the
San Joaquin Valley and snow to the Sierra Nevada. Latest
probabilities have a 10 to 40 percent chance of 6 inches of snow
above 7,000 feet. However, snow levels will decrease Sunday
morning as the snow amounts decrease. In the Valley, we are
looking at a 35 to 65 percent chance of a tenth of an inch
beginning late Saturday morning and early Saturday afternoon
through Sunday. There is a 5 to 15 percent chance of
thunderstorms in the Valley and Sierra Nevada through the
weekend into Monday.
This trough also brings stronger winds to the Mojave Slopes and
Desert and the Sierra Nevada Crest. A Wind Advisory for the
Mojave Slopes and Desert is in effect from 5 PM Saturday through
5 AM Monday due to a widespread 90 to 100 percent chance of
wind gusts of at least 40 mph over the area and a 35 to 50
percent chance of 55 mph gusts along the slopes.
As this first trough slides off, a second shortwave trough
slides in late Monday to Tuesday keeping things unstable before
a rex block moves in and strengthens from Wednesday through
Friday warming things back up. Storm chances remain due to the
second shortwave trough. Latest CPC outlooks have a 40 to 50
percent chance of above average temperatures but goes from about
normal precipitation in the 6-10 day outlook to a 33 to 40
percent chance of above average precipitation in the 8-14 day
outlook.
&&
.AVIATION...
VFR conditions are expected for the next 24 hours in the San
Joaquin Valley. However, MVFR to IFR conditions in showers
possible after 18Z in the Valley and the Sierra Nevada. Windy
and gusty conditions in the Mojave Desert Slopes beginning
this afternoon.
